BlackFly Draws Crowds at AirVenture
By Abigail Oleniczak
July 31, 2021 – The Opener BlackFly, capable of vertical takeoff and hovering, was designed by a “very technically strong, hardworking engineering team,” said Kristina Menton.
During EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2021, Kristina, EAA 1419959, is pilot of one of the BlackFlys on display at Exhibit Booth 500 near the FAA control tower. The innovative aircraft was designed in Toronto, Canada, and is an efficient all-electric Part 103 aircraft. Part 103 allows for the BlackFly to cruise at speeds up to 62 mph.
It is a single-seat ultralight operated by a joystick. A pilot certificate is not required in the United States to fly the aircraft, but the company requires that all operators successfully complete the company-mandated vehicle familiarization and operating training. The company anticipates selling 25 BlackFlys this fall.
The company takes time to ensure what it is selling is safe and affordable. Menton said “showing it to the public” was very exciting because they have been working on the aircraft for a long time. “We have focused on working out the kinks and really preparing the aircraft,” she said.
The eVTOL aircraft has flown over 35,000 miles. Ultimately, the company plans to sell the BlackFly for a price similar to a SUV. Marcus Leng founded Opener BlackFly.
