Air Show Forecast for April-May

  • Planes of Fame Air Museum’s F4U-1 Corsair
Among the many incredible warbirds performing at this year’s Chino air show is Planes of Fame Air Museum’s F4U-1 Corsair.

April 2, 2015 - Two air shows coming up soon - at the end of April and the beginning of May - are “bucket list” events you’ll want to attend at some point in your life. April 21-26 is the Sun ’n Fun International Fly-In & Expo at Lakeland-Linder Regional Airport, Florida, and May 1-3 is the Planes of Fame Air Show in Chino, California.

Sun ’n Fun is second only to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh in terms of size and scope, with a wide variety of aircraft types and vendors. While not exclusively a warbird show, the variety of the acts and hardware present is well worth a visit.

Warbirds are expected to be well represented this year with Aluminum Overcast and the Commemorative Air Force’s Red Tail P-51 headlining the display along with Greg Colyer and the Ace Maker T-33 jet. This will also be the North American debut of the Breitling Jet Team with its L-39s.

Sun ’n Fun is a huge warbird gathering with a large and expanding list of aircraft types. Pilots who bring a warbird should pre-register for the event. Pre-registration will help pilots by reducing time spent in line checking in at the event. It will also help the event organizer plan for aircraft parking layouts.

While warbirds appear at most air shows and fly-ins, there are only a few warbird shows that can be called “can’t miss.” The Planes of Fame show in Chino has become the single warbird centric show nationwide that is unique in its focus on warbirds and the promise of unusual formations never before seen, or at least not for a long time!

Every year seems to outdo the others - whether it’s four P-38 Lightnings, five P-47 Thunderbolts, or whatever else can be dreamed up, the show is simply for warbirds only; the “purest” Warbird display of all. This show amazes in terms of the variety and rarity of types displayed. This is the place to be on the West Coast in May!

Night and preview show takes place on May 1, with full show days scheduled for May 2-3. Photographers clamor to the May 1 preview show to beat the crowds and have an unsurpassed ability to see everything exercised prior to the show. Visit the Planes of Fame website for more information.
