Military operations combining aero-craft and water craft have led to some unusual yet colorful uses of force.
The first military submarine, “Turtle” boldly assaulted British shipping in 1776. Then in 1849 came the Austro-Hungarian paddle steamer “Vulcano,” a balloon-bomb carrier which launched history's first naval airborne strike. Airplanes came along. Subs got better. WWI and II pitted one against the other.
