Dorsal Fin to Avoid Loss-of-Control

The proposed method consists of a sharp-edged dorsal fin to be added in front of the vertical tail. Although this aerodynamic device is known by many, the exact physical workings of it are not always known and wide-spread implementation has never caught on. Currently there are no design methods for dorsal fins and the exact shape is normally determined during wind tunnel tests. This paper describes what a dorsal fin is used for, initial force derivation and CFD simulation results.
