Understanding Li-ion Batteries

This talk will explain how Li-ion batteries work and their usage in aircraft applications. The internal operation of Li-ion cells will be described and common cell chemistries such as LCO, LFP, NMC, and NCA will be contrasted. Cell packaging form factors, such as pouch, cylindrical and prismatic will be explained. The talk will give an overview of battery pack design issues, and show videos and pictures illustrating potential safety problems with Li-ion cells in aircraft.
