From the Archives — 50 Years Ago

By Ian Brown, Editor

March 2019 - Interesting that 50 years ago this month the following appeared in our EAA Sport Aviationmagazine. Rem Walker, a legend to Canadian homebuilders who was presented with a plaque recognizing a lifetime of commitment to the homebuilt movement in Canada at our first EAA Canada Breakfast at AirVenture in 2015, was looking for other members to form an EAA chapter in Saskatoon. As far as we can tell, this was an attempt to form an additional chapter, as Chapter 154 was already in operation since 1962, apparently in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.

The item read:

Also in that issue was a photograph of a recently completed aircraft and the following text:

This fixed-gear version of the Jurca Sirocco, CF-WIG, was completed by Geoffrey Royston, EAA 17461, of 443 Bent Crescent in Richmond Hill, Ontario. The only change from the drawings is in the tip tanks. The airplane is easy to fly, and the CG came out just right. An odd lower cowling, especially around the carburetor, encloses the 125-hp Lycoming O-290-G.”

The type club registry shows the aircraft as most recently having been under the ownership of Peter Barber, of Fergus, Ontario. If you’re reading this, we’d love to hear from you. The certificate of registration shows as having been cancelled in 2012. Is that the end for this nice-looking aircraft or is there a story?
