EAA Canada – Your Charity Is Official

By John G. Mader, EAA 581314, EAA Canada Treasurer

June 2020 – EAA Canada was established as a registered charity in June 2019. A non-member organization, EAA Canada is independent from the EAA based in Oshkosh that we all know and love, but is approved by EAA to use their licenced marks in pursuit of charitable aviation-related activities. EAA Canada gives EAA members an avenue by which they can support aviation education in Canada, and receive a tax receipt for doing so. The mission of EAA Canada is to advance aviation education in Canada through:

  • structured training programs, like SportAir Workshops;
  • providing scholarships, bursaries, and other forms of financial assistance to Canadian youth pursuing aviation careers, and;
  • providing funds to qualified Canadian educational institutions to advance efforts in Canadian aviation research, the results of which will be made publicly available.

Since receiving charitable registration last year, EAA Canada has been working hard to accomplish these objectives. We have already established a bursary for students in the aviation maintenance trades at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, to be awarded later this year, and are in the process of creating a similar award at Centennial College in Toronto. Despite the current slowdown in aviation flight training, EAA Canada is forging ahead with initiating a scholarship program, initially for commercial pilot students, to support young people planning an aviation career. It is hoped that we can make our first selection and award later this year.

SportAir Workshop in progress.

EAA Canada is now responsible for holding SportAir Workshops across Canada. These well-known courses help give interested people the skills and encouragement they need to get started in amateur-building, and also to help raise funds for EAA Canada's charitable programs. SportAir Workshops planned for this year have been temporarily sidelined due to COVID-19 restrictions, but will be resumed as soon as it is safe to do so. More at eaasportaircanada.ca.

Candidate for donation and restoration.

EAA Canada is also preparing to be able to accept "in-kind" donations, such as usable parts, avionics, tools, unfinished projects, and aircraft, either complete or needing work. Of course, EAA Canada must follow Canada Revenue Agency rules for establishing market valuations for receipting in-kind donations, and cannot spend funds for transporting or storage, but if you have something in the garage or hangar that you may never use again, contact the treasurer at the above email address, and we will proceed from there. You could be helping someone else get a start in aviation.
