Oh No, Snow!

By Ian Brown

October 2019 - As I write this, Calgary is receiving its first snowfall of the season, and it's not even October yet. It's an early reminder to put away the summer toys and fetch out the winter ones. To most people, that's putting away swimsuits or fishing poles and getting the snowmobiles and skis ready. For Canadian aviators, it's more about winter projects, heater systems, and whether or not the flying season is already over. Do you have a winter aircraft project, or are you just hoping the winter will be short and mild? Why not write to us about your winter project? Do you have a wintertime aviation story you'd like to share? We'd love to hear from you!

Many Canadian aviators leave for the south during the winter months. Now would be a good time for a story about your personal experience making the trip to warmer climes. Do you overwinter your aircraft somewhere in the sun? How about sending us an article about your experience?

Mike Davenport came through for us again this month, with an engaging article about his trip to and from AirVenture this year.

Our newest contributor, Sandrine Gressard, has an amazing project to introduce young girls to aviation. She's planning to make a significant contribution to the promotion of aviation with an adventurous plan to fly to every airport in Quebec. Enjoy the article! We hope she will send updates as the program develops. Sandrine and her husband own the airport on Isle-aux-Coudres in the St. Lawrence seaway, so maybe we can get her to write an article about this unique location, too.

The last SportAir Workshop of the year is being held at High River, Alberta, at the end of this month. If you are building or considering building an aircraft, this is a great way to get a lot of skills in a short time. Check out the ad in this edition for more information, and book your ticket for October 26 and 27. This very popular course is taught by experienced volunteers who will take you through all you need to know, and they will be available to answer questions about your own project. The instructors have built many aircraft and have a passion for helping others to build a first-class example of their very own.

As always, let us know what you're up to. You don't have to be a skilled writer to submit an article. Just a few paragraphs in an email with a couple of photos sent as attachments make it very easy to include your article. You don't have to format anything for publication; in fact we discourage you from doing that since it often has to be undone for inclusion in our newsletter.

Fly safely, and enjoy the fall while it lasts!
