EAA Reviewing FAA Response to Young Eagles Fuel Petition

September 5, 2013 - In late August, the FAA responded to an EAA petition, filed in April 2012, that would allow volunteer private pilots flying Young Eagles to be reimbursed for fuel consumed, subject to certain conditions.

The EAA Young Eagles and advocacy and safety departments are reviewing the exemption to evaluate the benefits and costs to the EAA-member Young Eagles pilots and to the program.

"We are still carefully analyzing the FAA's response to our request and the details of this exemption," said Brian O'Lena, Young Eagles program manager. "In the meantime, Young Eagles pilots should not attempt to operate under this exemption. EAA has not taken any action to establish the required record-keeping or any of the other requirements."

EAA will provide additional information to EAA chapters and Young Eagles pilots as soon as it completes its evaluation.
