Investigation Continues in Young Eagles Accident
September 29, 2014 – The National Transportation Safety Board is continuing its investigation into Saturday’s fatal aircraft accident that occurred at a Young Eagles flight rally near Buffalo-Lancaster Regional Airport in Lancaster, New York.
At approximately 10:25 a.m. on September 27, a Cessna 172 aircraft went down about 6 miles from that airport after that airplane made contact with a SeaRey aircraft that was also participating in the flight rally. The pilot and passenger in the Cessna, identified by local law enforcement authorities as the pilot, 78-year-old Anthony Mercurio, and his passenger, 14-year-old James Metz, were fatally injured in the accident. The pilot and passenger in the SeaRay were unharmed after that airplane landed safely.
EAA’s thoughts and condolences go to the families of those involved, and to the members of EAA Chapter 46, which was hosting the Young Eagles rally as part of its regular activities for young aviation enthusiasts each year.
