An Aluminum Overcast Visit for the Dogs

May 25, 2016 - The KARE-9 military dog team traveled to Davenport, Iowa, on April 28 to view the Aluminum Overcast, one of the world’s few remaining B-17s. The team’s mission is to serve military veterans and their families by offering encouragement and support.

The dogs and their handlers, all of whom are veterans, interacted with military men and women as well as members of the general public.

The highlight of the day was the presentation of the challenge coin to Don Schutter, a 93-year-old Air Force veteran who flew 38 missions in World War II from 1942-1945. The coin is a symbol of pride and camaraderie the origins of which trace back to World War I. View photo gallery >>

Aluminum Overcast’s stop in Davenport kicked off EAA’s B-17 tour, which includes stops all across North America. The 65,000-pound World War II bomber will be featured July 25-31 at AirVenture. Details on other stops in the tour and rates for ground tours and mission flights can be found here.
