Longtime FAA Executive and GA Pilot John Duncan Retires

June 6, 2019 - John Duncan, a longtime FAA executive and lifelong GA pilot, who most recently served as the deputy associate administrator of Aviation Safety with the agency, retired this week.

John has been with the FAA since 1986, and spent much of that time in the Flight Standards division before advancing to a position overseeing all of the aviation safety related branches of the agency in July 2018, including six years spent as the executive director of Flight Standards.

A GA pilot himself, John once flew a Titan Tornado from his home in Northern Virginia to Wisconsin to take part in EAA AirVenture Oshkosh where he camped with his family on vacation while also performing official duties for the FAA. He has spent many years working with EAA on issues important to our community, and he has always been a consummate, conscientious aviation safety regulator and a champion for the industry he personally loves, believing that safety is the bedrock of our collective success. In retirement, John and his family will continue to be a part of the EAA community both at home in their personal flight activities and camping in Oshkosh during AirVenture. John was presented the Wright Brothers Master Pilot award at the Meet the Administrator forum during EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2017 by then-FAA Administrator Michael Huerta.
