EAA Hosts CFIT Working Group in Oshkosh

June 21, 2018 - EAA hosted the CFIT Working Group in Oshkosh on June 12-14. The group, made up of representatives from industry associations, aircraft manufacturers, the FAA, and academia, analyzes fatal controlled flight into terrain (CFIT) accidents and looks to develop effective solutions to their root causes using a data-driven approach. The method used by the working group is similar to that used by the Commercial Air Safety Team (CAST), a Collier Trophy-winning effort to reduce airline fatalities.

The CFIT Working Group plans to complete its task by year’s end, recommending safety enhancements to the General Aviation Joint Steering Committee (GAJSC). The GAJSC is co-chaired by EAA and seeks to implement nonregulatory improvements to GA safety. In the nearly 10 years that the GAJSC has been active, general aviation has seen a statistically-significant reduction in its fatal accident rate.
