EAA Ramps up Support for SMO

July 2, 2015 - EAA has joined together with the Santa Monica Airport Association to show its support for keeping Santa Monica Airport (SMO) open as the push to close the airport gains more traction. The airport’s opponents have taken their complaints to Washington, D.C., where they have enlisted U.S. Representatives Ted Lieu (D-CA) and Karen Bass (D-CA) to convince the FAA to work with the City of Santa Monica to close the airport. The two representatives are scheduled to meet with FAA Associate Administrator for Airports Eduardo Angeles on July 8 to discuss the airport’s future.

Support for the airport’s continued operation remains strong despite the City of Santa Monica’s persistent attempts to close it. To do its part in the fight, EAA sent a targeted e-mail last week to its members in Southern California encouraging them to show their support for the airport. Since then, more than 1,000 letters have been sent to representatives Lieu and Bass in support of keeping Santa Monica Airport open.

Recognizing the importance of SMO to the local community’s economy and infrastructure, EAA will continue to stand behind the airport’s supporters as this issue progresses.
