FAA Inspectors Educated on Homebuilt Safety at EAA

August 13, 2015 - This week, FAA inspectors from around the country participated in an amateur-built aircraft accident investigation course hosted by the DOT’s Transportation Safety Institute (TSI) and EAA. The three-day course, which occurs on EAA grounds, gives FAA inspectors the opportunity to gain more familiarity with the amateur-built aircraft they may encounter in the field when responding to an accident.

The inspectors have the opportunity to learn from professional accident investigators in addition to EAA staff and other experts in the amateur-built aircraft field.

Hosting the course on EAA grounds is part of the EAA advocacy team’s efforts to educate regulators about the steadily growing homebuilt community. Though we hope the inspectors never have to use the skills they gain in the course, it is absolutely essential that they learn them in order to respond properly to an amateur-built aircraft accident, and to have better familiarity with the aircraft and our community when encountering them in the field.

EAA helped to develop and has hosted these courses for over a decade. We applaud the FAA’s recognition of the importance of such a course and its continued support in holding it on EAA grounds.
