Beautiful Buhl

October 8, 2015 - EAA Director of Publications Jim Busha met up with Ron Johnson of Rockford, Illinois, last weekend to capture his 1931 Buhl Bull Pup NC348Y lounging on the lush green grass at the Poplar Grove Airport.

“I purchased the Bull Pup in 2012 and realized that as a 1920s design it needs to be treated as such ,” said Johnson. “The Bull Pup has a tail skid, no brakes, and a ‘mighty’ 45-hp Zeke engine that pulls it along at less than breakneck speeds. Needless to say one has to learn the entire idiosyncrasies of maneuvering this little airplane on the ground before ever taking flight. It’s a fun airplane and it’s even more fun to fly.”

Also pictured is another pride and joy of Johnson’s, his Packard-powered Studebaker Golden Hawk, built in 1956.
