'Once in a Lanc Time'

Two Remaining Lancasters to Form Up Over England

February 26, 2014 - The world's only two remaining airworthy Avro Lancaster bombers will be together this summer as the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum's (CWHM) prized Lanc will be flown to England to join the Royal Air Force's renowned Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) in August. News of the historic flight across the Atlantic comes from the CWHM eFlyer newsletter.

The Canadian aircraft will participate in several events and activities during its month long visit overseas, according to the museum. Several air displays and fly pasts are planned with the BBMF Lancaster and World War II fighters starting on August 14.

CWHM President/CEO, Squadron Leader (Ret.) David G. Rohrer C.D., a Lancaster pilot, called the historic pairing a "once in a Lanc time" event as it will not happen again. "A rare window of opportunity was identified to bring the last two flying Lancasters in the world together as a special salute to all the veterans of Bomber Command, many of whom are in their late 80s or older now," Rohrer said. "The flying display showcase will pay tribute to all those who served in the time of need, in Canada, England, and the entire Commonwealth, that likely will never be seen again," he added.

Squadron Leader Dunc Mason, BBMF commander, commented, "To see these two aircraft flying at events together will be a unique sight and also the opportunity to truly commemorate those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Lest We Forget."

The CWHM Lancaster will depart Hamilton, Ontario, on August 4 with a scheduled August 8 arrival at the BBMF, RAF Coningsby. Planned en-route stops are at Goose Bay, Labrador, Canada; Narsarsuaq, Greenland; and Keflavik, Iceland. Visit the CWHM website for more information.
