EAA is celebrating 35 years of introducing youth to the world of aviation through the EAA Air Academy with a unique exhibit in the EAA Aviation Museum focused on the history of and graduates from the Air Academy.
Kyle Voltz, EAA 880499, cannot remember a time when he did not love airplanes. His parents built a Quad City Challenger II together before getting married — Kyle jokes that since they pulled that off, they could handle a marriage — and he had his first airplane ride at 1 year old.
Susanne Stalker grew up not too far from Oshkosh, but it was a hands-on experience at her local high school that caused her to initially pursue aviation, not any involvement with EAA — at least not at first.
Sarah Borg, EAA 1146700, was introduced to aviation while her father was building a Thorp T-18, completing the project when Sarah was about 5 years old.
Young Eagles flights can have a dramatic impact on young people. Kyle Chmielewski, EAA 1180535, got his first airplane ride when he was 12 years old. By age 13, young Kyle was in flight training.
Patrick Frye, EAA 1249939, was lucky enough to grow up around aviation. He’s been immersed in it since age 3, so coming to the EAA Air Academy was an exceptional experience for Patrick.
Kyle Thede, EAA 853537, like so many other fortunate children, caught the aviation bug from his grandfather, who gave him his first airplane ride at age 6. "It was just something that I was drawn to," Kyle said.
While attending the Air Academy, David learned about a rare opportunity for the campers: A Concorde would be visiting Oshkosh that summer, and one of the Air Academy attendees was going to take a ride on the supersonic-capable airliner.
A love of aviation runs through Brian Greene’s family, but it was a trip to the EAA Air Academy when he was 15 that acted as the springboard to send Brian, EAA 257271, into a truly aviation-filled life.
