EAA Works to Maintain Viability and Safety of Warbird Operations Participates in FAA Specialty Examiner Meeting

January 26, 2017 - Decades ago EAA was instrumental in creating specialty examiner programs to support the unique needs of the warbird and experimental jet communities and continues to support these crucial efforts to keep these special aircraft flying safely. Specialized examiners fill a need to ensure that experienced and well-trained pilots are available to operate some of the most interesting and challenging aircraft. Ensuring safety through training and standardization continues to be one of the group’s top priorities.

Sean Elliott, EAA vice president of advocacy and safety, who himself is a specialty examiner for the B-17, took part in the all-day meeting at the North Dallas flight standards district office. “It was great to see both the transition to new oversight with the agency and the overall collaboration in solving this community’s issues,” he said. “This meeting was one of the most productive annual meetings that I have attended so far.”

There are currently nearly 30 designees under this program and the FAA’s continued support shows a dedication to ensuring these unique aircraft are flying for many years to come.
