EAA Reviewing NavWorx ADS-B Airworthiness Directive

November 3, 2016 - EAA is reviewing a proposed airworthiness directive (AD) regarding certain NavWorx ADS-B systems that raises concerns about the accuracy of the position broadcast by the unit and would require the removal of all relevant NavWorx ADS-B models currently installed in aircraft. The AD would affect ADS600-B (part numbers 200-0012 and 200-0013) and ADS600-EXP (part number 200-8013) units.

EAA is concerned that this proposed AD applies to the non-TSO’d (Technical Standard Order) version of the NavWorx unit that is intended for installation in experimental aircraft — one that is not approved for installation in type-certificated aircraft. ADs do not ordinarily apply to such parts in experimental aircraft. EAA therefore believes the scope of this AD may be inappropriately wide and could set a dangerous precedent.

EAA’s evaluation of the proposed AD is actively proceeding and may reveal additional concerns. There may be further updates as the review process continues. Public comments are due on December 19, and EAA members are encouraged to submit comment if they have concerns with the proposed AD.
