Restored C-47 “Flies the Hump” Over Himalayas

December 22, 2016 - After more than three months en route from Australia, the Flying Tiger Historical Organization’s restored C-47 Buzz Buggy successfully completed its trip over the Himalayan mountains and landed at its destination in Guilin, China on November 19.

Originally intended to be a 10-day trip for the 72-year-old warbird, Buzz Buggy’s last mission was met with a number of weather, political, and mechanical obstacles, including losing an engine not once, but twice.

However, Flying Tiger Historical Organization President Larry Jobe said in the end these obstacles helped make the flight even more special.

“Different cultures and religions pulled together to help make this mission a success, much as different nations pulled together in World War II to defend China and defeat Japan,” Jobe said.

Plans have been made to repaint the C-47 to authentic WWII livery before it is placed on permanent display at the new Flying Tigers Guilin Heritage Park and Museum. A special dedication ceremony will take place on March 25, 2017.
