FAA Bulletin Highlights MOSAIC Change for Light-Sport Safety Directives

By EAA Staff

Last week, the FAA issued a special airworthiness information bulletin (SAIB) highlighting one of the many rule changes made by Modernization of Special Airworthiness Certification (MOSAIC). Under the October 2025 implementation of the rulemaking, manufacturer-issued safety directives for light-sport category aircraft (often called “S-LSA”) are no longer mandatory. Previously, these directives had regulatory authority similar to FAA-issued airworthiness directives (ADs).

While this rule change gives owners more regulatory flexibility in maintaining their aircraft, safety directives are still important to take seriously and, in many cases, follow. Per the SAIB, “Many safety directives identify critical safety-of-flight or other airworthiness issues and serve as an important means of maintaining the safety of light-sport category aircraft.” It further states that owners should continue to comply with such directives and that, if warranted, these manufacturer directives may serve as bases for future ADs.
