FAA’s New NOTAM System Online April 18

By EAA Staff

The FAA is transitioning its legacy Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) systems to the NOTAM Management Service (NMS) on April 18, 2026. The transition should be transparent for end users. Users are not expected to experience any outages, nor will they see an initial change in how NOTAMs are accessed or presented.

The NOTAM system has long been a target for modernization, with the antiquated nature of the current system being highlighted on January 11, 2023, when an outage led to the FAA directing airlines to pause all domestic departures. The 90-minute disruption became a national news story and brought significant attention to the need to prioritize NOTAM system modernization.

According to the FAA’s NMS Portal, the system is securely hosted in the cloud, providing “near-real-time data exchange, enabling efficient data flows and better stakeholder collaboration.” In September 2025, the FAA announced that it had deployed the first stage of NMS, beginning with limited operations to early adopter stakeholders enabling testing and validation.

While end users will not see any initial differences in how NOTAMs are presented, the implementation of the new system is intended to eventually support improvements in how pilots receive and use NOTAMs.
