Gone West: EAA Homebuilders' Hall of Famer Robert 'Bob' Whittier
January 2, 2020 - EAA Homebuilders' Hall of Famer and prolific EAA Sport Aviation writer Bob Whittier died peacefully and surrounded by loved ones in St. Louis, Missouri, on December 24, 2019. He was 97 years old.
In addition to writing for EAA Sport Aviation from the 1950s, back when it was known as EAA Experimenter, to well into the 21st century, Bob, EAA 1235, also contributed to magazines such as Air Facts, Skyways, FLYING, Air Progress, Rudder, and Salt Water Sportsman. In total, he wrote more than 2,500 articles, and also penned 10 books on a wide range of topics.
Bob was inducted into the EAA Homebuilders' Hall of Fame in 2004, in recognition for his contributions to the world of aviation.
Bob is survived by his three children and their partners: Jenney Whittier and Charles Clark, John Whittier and Brenda Otterson, and James and AnaMaria Whittier. Bob is the loving grandfather of Adam, Christopher, Emily, Lauren, and Michael Whittier. He also leaves numerous nieces and nephews in Massachusetts and California. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
