EAA Exceeds NTSB Recommendation on Flight Test Training

March 21, 2019 - In a recent letter to EAA CEO and chairman of the Board Jack J. Pelton, Robert Sumwalt, chairman of the NTSB, wrote that EAA’s “actions exceed the intent” of a recommendation made in 2012 regarding flight test training.

In the letter, which was a response to a letter EAA sent to the NTSB in August, Sumwalt wrote that the EAA Flight Test Manual, in addition to updated EAA webinars, work with the FAA on the Additional Pilot Program advisory circular, the EA-B Aircraft Safety Pledge, and continued work on a path of task-based flight testing combined to exceed the recommendation of the NTSB laid out in Safety Recommendation A-12-40.

The NTSB also noted that EAA has been responsive to recommendations laid out in Safety Recommendations A-12-41 and A-12-43, concerning data recording technology and a coalition of type clubs with incentives to encourage builders to complete training for their type of experimental amateur-built aircraft.
