EAA Participates in NTSB Loss of Control Meeting

April 26, 2018 - EAA participated this week in an NTSB roundtable discussion on in-flight loss of control (LOC) accidents, the most common factor in fatal general aviation accidents. EAA Vice President of Advocacy and Safety Sean Elliott spoke at the event alongside Charlie Precourt, the EAA board of directors’ vice chairman. Elliott and Precourt joined more than a dozen other aviation safety experts from across the industry, the FAA, and the NTSB.

The participants discussed training, technology, and community safety culture as potential solutions to the problem. EAA highlighted its leadership in the safety of amateur-built aircraft, its IMC Club and VMC Club programs at the chapter level, and its sponsorship of the Founder’s Innovation Prize. Thomas Baron and Justin Zhou of Remora Systems, the 2017 prizewinners, also presented at the event.

“EAA has a lot to be proud of in our efforts to ensure a safer GA community,” Elliott said. “In particular, the Remora Systems group really impressed the room with their project, a head-mounted airspeed and angle of attack display, and validated our efforts to foster innovation through the annual Founder’s Innovation Prize competition.”

EAA currently co-chairs the General Aviation Joint Steering Committee, the leading organization of industry, government, and academia collaborating for GA safety. During its time of activity, there has been a marked decline in the GA accident rate.
