New EAA/Ninety-Nines Scholarship Pays for Flight Training Through Solo

April 18, 2013 - EAA and the Ninety-Nines are proud to announce the Karen Johnson Solo Scholarship, which will provide young women (ages 16-20) with financial support for flight training through first solo.

The scholarship awards will be announced during AirVenture Oshkosh 2013's WomenVenture activities on Friday, August 2.

The scholarship honors the memory of Karen Johnson, beloved member and chapter chair of the Ventura County Ninety-Nines who died in January 2013 while making a frost control flight in Delano, California. Karen touched many lives and inspired many of her colleagues to pursue advanced flight training.

The funds for the scholarship were provided by the Ventura County chapter in memory of their chapter chair, through generous donations from Barry Schiff, the Van Nuys Propeller Aircraft Association, and friends of Karen Johnson.

Applications will be accepted through EAA's scholarship website through July 1. First prize of $3,000 and second prize of at least $2,800 will be paid in installments to the winner's selected flight training program.

Applicants are required to include a 500-600 word essay describing why you want to learn to fly, how you will apply your training, and goals for your future. It is also expected that winners will provide a 400-1,000 word essay to the scholarship committee after their selection sharing their training experiences and the goals that they have met.
