April 2022 – Since 2015 and 2017, respectively, EAA members have enjoyed participating in organized hangar flying through EAA’s IMC and VMC clubs.

EAA IMC and VMC Clubs are extensions of local EAA chapters and offer monthly IMC and/or VMC program meetings where pilots can network and share knowledge and experiences. The purpose of EAA Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC) Clubs is to promote instrument flying, proficiency, and safety, while EAA Visual Meteorological Conditions (VMC) Clubs build proficiency when flying under visual flight rule conditions.

In both club types, EAA provides presentations that describe a real-world scenario that places the club participants in the pilot’s seat. The scenarios are designed to encourage a pathway to open discussion for all participants to answer the question “What would you do if this happened to you?” Providing the opportunity for each IMC and VMC member participant to hypothetically place themselves into an actual situation, and be involved in open discussion is the key to build proficiency and increase safety as a pilot. This is educational “hangar flying” at its best.

Additional program offerings such as the IMC and VMC Questions of the Month provide challenging and engaging content to teach, and to make you think.

EAA’s IMC/VMC clubs and related Questions of the Month are a great way to bring local pilots back to the airport for healthy and educational hangar talk with the added benefit of increasing proficiency and safety through group discussion.

Forming an EAA IMC or VMC club is easy. You are invited to begin your journey toward flying, proficiency, and safety by learning more here: EAA.org/IMCclub and EAA.org/VMCclub
