Several popular actors, known for roles on both the big and small screen, are in town this week to share stories and insights into two big-budget aviation films — one a classic, and one that won’t be released until later this year.
Tonight at the Fly-In Theater presented by PenFed it’s a tribute to Jimmy Stewart, featuring a discussion about and a brief behind-the-scenes look at the upcoming biopic Jimmy, which tells the story of the beloved actor’s time as a bomber pilot in World War II, leading up to the making of the classic It’s a Wonderful Life.
Host Hal Bryan, EAA’s managing editor and in-house movie nerd, will be joined by Jen Lilley, who plays Stewart’s wife, Gloria, and Rob Riggle, who plays one of Stewart’s squadron mates. Lilley is a prolific actor and producer who is perhaps best known for her role as Theresa Donovan in more than 400 episodes of Days of Our Lives. Riggle, in addition to his roles in films like Step Brothers and television series like Saturday Night Live and The Daily Show, is a combat veteran who served more than 20 years before retiring from the U.S. Marine Corps as a lieutenant colonel. Riggle is also a longtime private pilot.
Tonight’s presentation begins at 8:15, and will be followed by a screening of Stewart’s much-loved Strategic Air Command.
Then, on Friday, director Michael Caton-Jones and producer Kathryn Wyler (daughter of the legendary William Wyler) will join Hal on stage along with stars Matthew Modine, Tate Donovan, D.B. Sweeney, and Reed Diamond for a screening of 1990’s Memphis Belle.
Modine is also known for Full Metal Jacket and The Dark Knight Rises, Sweeney for Fire in the Sky and The Cutting Edge, Donovan for Argo and playing the title role in Disney’s animated Hercules, and Diamond for Moneyball and the current hit TV series The Testaments.
Friday’s program also begins at 8:15 p.m. The Memphis Belle cast and crew will also be participating in an extended presentation the night before, headlining Thursday’s programming at the Theater in the Woods.
