Vancouver, BC, IMC Club Discusses Local Scenarios
May 2017 - The third meeting of the Vancouver, British Columbia, EAA/IMC Club was its first attempt at hosting at alternate airports. The Pacific Flying Club graciously hosted it at the Boundary Bay Airport.
Boundary Bay Airport (CZBB) is located centrally in Delta, British Columbia, and is about 20 minutes from Vancouver International Airport (YVR), and less than 40 minutes to downtown Vancouver, Surrey, and the U.S. border. Since its conception during World War II as a flight training center for Canadian air force pilots, Boundary Bay Airport still is a major flight training hub for local and international pilots. In fact, Boundary Bay Airport is Canada’s fifth busiest airport.
EAA members Steve Sanghara and Ryan Van Haren acted as program coordinators, helping steer the dialogue through two interesting scenarios. One covered rapidly forming fog over a widespread area, and the second was an occurrence of communications failure on departure out of Nanaimo Airport in British Columbia.
The Vancouver EAA/IMC Club seems to be now standardizing on one scenario from EAA/IMC and another dealing with a local incident. It gives them both great video content from EAA, as well as the significant benefit of discussing local issues.
The club now has established its meeting schedule. Expect meetings to be held on the last Wednesday of the month, with the continued format of two months at YPK followed by one at an alternate local airport.
Steve Sanghara, along with Michael Carriere, a former flight instructor turned Vancouver terminal controller, has graciously offered to provide the group with local scenarios for its meetings.

At EAA/IMC Clubs, the purpose is to promote instrument flying, proficiency, and safety in a “hangar flying” atmosphere in which pilots can network and share knowledge and experiences. Are you a participant in one of those meetings?
