MGL Discovery Lite – Low-cost EFIS for homebuilts

By Ian Brown

August 2015 - Looking for a low-cost highly functional electronic flight information system (EFIS) for your small aircraft? Here is one more choice. Headquartered in Cape Town, South Africa, but with a support site in Torrance, California, MGL Avionics recently announced a very highly functional EFIS, combined with an engine-monitoring system for homebuilt aircraft. It is called the Discovery Lite. Priced at around C$3,600, it provides the ability to interface with any two of comms, transponder and automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B). It has a pitot input and engine-monitoring support; you can buy the subkit for around $500.

The device seems to have an internal GPS, maps, and attitude and heading reference system (AHARS) and is well worth investigating.
