EAA Requests Extension on Remote ID NPRM

January 9, 2020 - EAA is requesting an extension of the comment period for an intricate Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) regarding remote ID of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) introduced on December 31. With this complex NPRM being more than 300 pages in length, 60 days is inadequate for providing a detailed response that addresses all concerns.

The NPRM as written would require most UAS in the airspace to have remote ID, and the rule as described currently includes many highly complex changes and is potentially harmful. EAA is requesting the extension on the comment period to allow for informed, data-driven comments to the docket, to ensure the best result for all parties.

According to the NPRM, "The most helpful comments reference specific portions of the proposal, explain the reason for any recommended change, and include supporting data." EAA believes that in order to achieve the most effective corrective recommendations that are well-defined per section of the NPRM, more than 60 days will be required to do so.

EAA is in the process of dissecting the pieces of this NPRM, as they affect both manned aircraft and the traditional model community. More information and specific guidance on how to appropriately respond to this proposed rule will be provided soon, to ensure all voices are heard in a manner that will have the most impactful outcome on the decision-making process.
