March 10, 2015 - A special women-only Young Eagles rally was held Saturday hosted by EAA Chapter 812 in Ocala, Florida, in celebration of Women of Aviation week. The event was organized by chapter member CarolAnn Garratt, pilot and author who set aviation records flying her Mooney Ovation around the world three times to benefit ALS research.

Female pilots, teachers, and workers participated as 20 young students from Ocala’s West Port High School, Belleview High School, and home-schooled students gathered at Ocala International Airport-Taylor Field. They were provided with a tour of the ATC tower, and received a classroom lesson about the fundamentals of flight then attended a career workshop given by two woman airline pilots, a former military woman pilot who flew medevac flights in the Middle East, and others.

And perhaps the best part – each student was given a Young Eagles flight in a general aviation aircraft.

“I could use almost any cliché, hit a home run, knocked out of the park, but that would not do it justice,” said Warren Levin, Chapter 812 Young Eagles coordinator. “This chapter stands up and comes together to make something happen.”
