June 11, 2014 - Cessna Aircraft Co. began its third annual Discover Flying Challenge (DFC), on Tuesday, June 10, at Textron Aviation in Wichita, Kansas.

The flying challenge consists of eight participants who take part in an internship promoting aviation and engaging aviation enthusiasts across the country. Six of the interns pilot Cessna 172 Skyhawks for a summer-long expedition across the U.S. The other two interns assist in scheduling and dispatching the pilot interns during the program.

DFC interns will attend EAA AirVenture Oshkosh and meet with fellow pilots help inspire others to become involved in general aviation.

The DFC interns participated in the opening of the event by performing a synchronized engine start before departing for their respective regions. Joe Hepburn, senior vice president at Piston Aircraft, said DFC continues to be a great opportunity for participants. “We have another strong group ready to continue the tradition of sharing our passion for flying,” Hepburn said. “The enthusiasm of our interns is contagious, and we’re thrilled to get them in the air in their customized Cessna 172 Skyhawks.”

The pilots’ progress and scheduled events can be accessed at the Discover Flying Challenge website, which provides detailed itineraries and a map of appearances. Learn more information about the DFC interns at Cessna's website or on the Discover Flying Challenge Facebook page. There is a Cessna's Twitter page  and hashtag (#DFC14) available as well to learn more about the company and the event.
