Chapter 1 Spanks the Competition at Pioneer Airport Ultralight Days

July 2015 - EAA’s recent Ultralight Fly-in at Pioneer Airport was well attended as area pilots flocked to compete in Saturday’s pilot proficiency event. The pilots competed for top honors in events that included a spot landing competition, flying torpedo runs, and a bean bag drop (which simulates the message drops that World War I pilots used to communicate with their field commanders).

Taking top honors with the high score of the day was EAA Ultralight Chapter 1 member and Oshkosh Ultralight Vice Chair Steve Madgic flying his Quicksilver MX Super with incredible precision. Steve was also awarded the Pilot Proficiency Plaque for 2015. This traveling trophy, which has roots to 2000, will now reside with EAA UL Chapter 1. EAA Chapters 75 and 41 have also held the plaque in past years.

Also on the podium were Chapter 75 members Steve and Brian Krueger flying their RANS S-7, Paul Buss at the controls of his beautiful Avid Flyer, Russ Post in his Quicksilver GT-400, and Joe Mapes flying his Ridge Runner. These incredibly talented pilots put on a great show for the crowd all Saturday afternoon; even strong crosswinds and several rain squalls did not shake them in the least.

Thanks for a great job gentlemen!
