As autumn approaches, I reflect on how our Canadian summer was for flying. I believe the answer to that depends on what part of Canada you reside. Last year, the Prairies experienced wildfires and endless smoke. This summer, it was British Columbia’s turn. We have gratitude and awe for those pilots that contributed to the emergency efforts, whether it be general aviation civilians who used their aircraft for evacuations and the movement of supplies or the water bombers beating off the flames.
Shortly, we will begin working on our plans for AirVenture 2027. We have had a number of individuals that have come forward with new ideas and a desire to get involved. We are initiating an AirVenture Planning Committee, which will meet virtually a few times during the year, so you can participate from any corner of Canada. I’d like to congratulate Miguel Kiss, EAA Chapter 63’s newest private pilot. Miguel has volunteered with Chapter 63 for a number of years, is passionate about aviation, and has had the dream of becoming a commercial pilot since he was a little boy. Having graduated from high school in June, he has just been hired to work with the ground crew of a local airline as he begins his commercial flight training. Miguel’s dedication to his flight training is admirable: he contended with poor weather, wildfire smoke, and instructor shortages, while working a part-time job and finishing high school.
