Identification of Weather Conditions

Watch

A watch is used when the risk of hazardous weather or hydrologic event has increased significantly, but its occurrence, location, or timing is still uncertain. It is intended to provide enough lead-time so those who need to set their plans in motion can do so. A watch means that hazardous weather is possible. People should have a plan of action in case a storm threatens, and they should listen for later information and possible warnings especially when planning travel or outdoor activities. NWS may activate weather spotters in areas affected by watches to help them better track and analyze the event.

Warning

A warning is issued when a hazardous weather or hydrologic event is occurring, imminent, or likely. A warning means weather conditions pose a threat to life or property. People in the path of the storm need to take protective action. NWS may activate weather spotters in areas affected by warnings to help them better track and analyze the event.

What To Do in a Weather Emergency

In the event of a Weather Emergency, Winnebago County emergency sirens will activate. At this point, it will be determined if the Event, or portions of the Event, should be postponed or cancelled and the grounds should be Evacuated – this will be a joint decision made by EAA Senior Leadership, on-site NOAA/NWS meteorologists, the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department, and Winnebago County Emergency Management.

Evacuation Protocol for Emergency Weather

  • In the event of a weather emergency that rises to the level of an evacuation, guests, vendors, performers, volunteers, and EAA employees, seeking shelter can use the EAA Aviation Museum. School buses will transport those seeking shelter from all Red One Markets and Camp Scholler Shower Houses to the EAA Museum.

    EAA

  • You also have the option to shelter in place at your campsite (if you are camping), a low-lying area or, if feasible, in your vehicle.

  • If you choose to shelter in a low-lying area, you should find a low spot away from trees, fences, and poles, but make sure the spot is not prone to flash flooding. Cover your head with your hands and lie face down on the ground.

  • If you choose to take shelter in your vehicle, it is recommended that you crouch below the window line and turn the engine on. This will allow the vehicle's airbags to be deployed.

  • EAA reserves the right to postpone, or cancel, the Event, or portions of the Event, if, in EAA’s judgment, there is a serious risk of injury to guests, vendors, performers, volunteers, and EAA employees because of a weather emergency.

  • If an evacuation is ordered for a portion of or the entire AirVenture grounds/buildings, but it is unsafe to evacuate, a shelter in place order will be issued. Proper shelter in place protocol will be followed.

  • In the event of an emergency weather evacuation, school buses will transport guests needing shelter to the main evacuation shelter, the EAA Museum, 3000 Poberezny Road.
