My Favourite Aviation Photo

By Jeff Seaborn, Chair, Canadian Council

April 5, 2022 – Not a great photo, but an interesting story behind it, courtesy of my dad. The photo was shot out the cockpit window of the Super Universal he had restored.

Returning from the Yellowknife air show, with a lot of lonesome bush to cross, were Jim Hrymack in his Pitts, Ken Fowler in his Rocket, and Kent Pietch in his Interstate — the first two just barely hanging in the air at our 105 mph.

Unfortunately, we didn't have a camera at the ready in the cabin, only an old 8mm video camera which Don McLean used to shoot this, then a photo taken of the movie. Our destination was Peace River for it's air show on July 27, 2002 — a body-numbing, head-throbbing leg of 4 hours, 15 minutes duration with the 149-decibel Pratt & Whitney roar in the cockpit. Jim Hrymack in the Pitts had to stop and fuel part way, then catch up.
