March 2023 – I don't know how many of you received this announcement or had the time to read it if you did, but I'm aware that several of you receiving Bits and Pieces may not have seen it. My own recollection of the Chance Vought F4U Corsair is when, as a child, I was really into building model aircraft whereas my older brother Bill was into burning them for the excitement of seeing them go up in flames. I built what I recall was the Airfix 1/72 F4U-1D kit. If, like me, you have fond memories of the Corsair you're certain to want to read the following announcement about a reunion of this special aircraft planned for AirVenture 2023. Be sure to make a special note of the movie Devotion playing at AirVenture as part of the Corsair reunion.

“A reunion of the Chance Vought F4U Corsair, the unique gullwing fighter aircraft best known for its exploits off U.S. aircraft carriers, will be among the warbird highlights at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2023. The 70th edition of EAA’s fly-in convention is July 24-30 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.”

You can see a splendid EAA YouTube video of the Corsair by clicking on the link here.

The F4U Corsair was the first single engine aircraft to fly more than 400 mph. It was initially designed for use on aircraft carriers but had such a poor safety record in doing so that it became more useful in land-based operations.
