Tis the Season?

December 2020 – By the time you read this you'll be well into festive season preparations. What's your plan for the season of snow and cold? Heading south? Planning cozy nights in your basement restoring or building something? Maybe now is the time to encourage some of you to tell us what you're up to. As the double whammy of COVID-19 and snowy days hits, why not spend some time creating that literary masterpiece on your project?

If you haven't noticed it, you can update your currency with the Transport Canada Self-Paced Study Program. It might not be a bad idea to do it even if you're technically current, but just a bit rusty. You might also enjoy reading the latest copy of the Aviation Safety newsletter. Those of you who own Cessna 180, 182, and 185 models might like to check out this Airworthiness Directive. Hint: You can select to download these documents and save them so you don't have to be online.

Your Canadian Council representatives have been planning to do some chapter development in the New Year. How many of you think that you have enough members and couldn't possibly cope with more? Thought not! A growing chapter can only mean good things. New ideas, new energy, and more activities can all be achieved with a few new faces in your chapter. As you will see in this issue, some chapters have managed to get together despite the COVID-19 restraints. Chapter 266's Richard Guevara wrote an excellent article on how to keep things going by using a Zoom meeting, not just to run a chapter meeting but also to host a hangar tour.

Chapter 245 also recently hosted a very well attended Zoom talk by ferry pilot Kerry McCauley. You may have seen him on the TV show Dangerous Flights. He recently wrote a book which is worth a read, judging by the harrowing experience in this sample chapter. An added bonus was that members of five other chapters were able to join in the meeting. How's that for promoting your chapter activities?

How many readers would like access to newsletters from other Canadian chapters? We thought we'd include one from Chapter 65 for you this month. We're investigating what we can do to facilitate chapter sharing. One initiative has been to reinvigorate our Facebook page, EAA Canada, and if you haven't already checked it out, you might like to take a peek as the dark nights approach.
