RC Flying Field
If you're eager to see the fun of RC model aircraft flight, or if you'd like to fly your own RC or drone, EAA has a specific location available for that during EAA AirVenture Oshkosh!
EAA received FAA authorization to open a designated area on the south half of the Pioneer Airport runway for sUAS/drone/model aircraft operations during specified evening hours (2022 hours TBD). It allows AirVenture attendees to operate a small RC model (5 pounds or less) in that designated area from 7 to 9:30 p.m. for each of those six evenings. These are the only areas where such operations are permitted at AirVenture.
Even during the evening operations, pilots must remain within the prescribed pilot stations as shown on the photo below. Operations on any other part of EAA or Wittman Regional Airport property are prohibited.
Parking: A limited number of parking passes will be available for each evening to make it easier to transport models to the field. The parking passes for the current day will be available at the Horizon Hobby exhibit location in Hangar A, or at the AMA exhibit trailer located in the Fun Fly Zone.
Transportation: A nightly shuttle service will operate between EAA's Blue Barn and the RC Flying Field beginning at 6 p.m. each evening.
As with all Oshkosh operations, safety is the top priority. EAA's policy uses much of the existing Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) model aircraft safety code, and those operating these aircraft at Pioneer Airport are required to be AMA members. (AMA will have membership staff on hand for those wishing to join.) AMA will also have a safety officer on-site providing guidance during all operations.
This policy is not applicable to the EAA-sponsored drone cage located at Aviation Gateway Park, KidVenture, or any AirVenture acts incorporating drone/sUAS/model aircraft as part of their performance.
